Easter looong weekend!

Although Australia is not a particularly religious country, they do have TWO public holidays for Easter (probably cause Aussies just like public holidays!), so this weekend was an extra long 4 days! Most people use this opportunity for a long weekend somewhere in the country, but we hadn't made any plans, so we were stuck in the city.. luckily there's some nice countryside close to the city, and lots of events in the city as well. On Friday we hopped in the car and drove out to the Mornington Peninsula, on the other side of Port Phillip Bay, to check out the ocean beaches and breath in some fresh Southern Ocean breeze. A bit to chilly for a dip though!

On Saturday we went to see English stand-up comedian Stephen K Amos, who was in town as part of the Melbourne Comedy Festival; his show was simply hilarious, definitely a must-see if he's ever performing at a theater near you!

We didn't have any plans to go out on Sunday, but the weather was so nice (contrary to the forecast), that we just had to go out and catch some sunshine before autumn really kicks in, we went out to a park on the edge of the city, to have a stroll through the scores of bbq-ing families (a favoured Ozzie Easter activity, apparently).

On Monday our friends Rachael and Andrew invited us to go see a game of Australian Rules Football, otherwise known as 'footy'. Footy is incredibly popular in Melbourne; more than half the teams in the national league are from Melbourne, so most games are Melbourne derbies! So was this game, between the Richmond (where we currently live) Tigers, and the Western Bulldogs (from the western suburbs, the team that Andrew and Rachael support). The game is quite a peculiar one, not related to Rugby or American Football, but similar to Gaelic Football, popular in Ireland. It involves kicking an oval ball around a cricket oval, and ultimately trying to kick it between the posts at the opposite end of the ground.. pretty simple, but very entertaining nonetheless. Although the Tigers got off to a good start, the Bulldogs quickly gained the upperhand, and the only thing left to do for the Tigers was to vent their anger during the various on-pitch brawls (the game does live up to its 'rough' reputation I have to say).. Safe to say I won't be supporting the Richmond Tigers! Luckily we've bought a house in Hawthorn East just this week, so I can support the Hawthorn Hawks (who just happen to be last year's league champions..), go Hawks!

To close this week's post, here's a picture of our new house, we're moving in in June, so you can start booking dates for our guest room now!

Until next week's post!

ps. thanks Rachael and Andrew for the footy tickets!!
